Back-to-School Tips For Parents

welcome-back-to-school-clipart1

Back-to-School time can be an exciting, yet stressful period for parents and kids alike. Between the school supplies list, open houses, uniform shopping and the utter disbelief that your summer break has abruptly ended, the anxieties can easily outweigh the joyful anticipation of a new school year. Here are just a few tips from the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) to help your family cut through the stress:

Mark Your Calendar. Write down important dates. This is especially important when you’re juggling the schedules of multiple children. Don’t be surprised by a choir concert or soccer banquet that you forgot about. Write down these dates as soon as possible and don’t forget to check your calendar periodically or else your preparation will go to waste.

Buy Back-to-School Supplies Early. Shop for supplies as soon as your child get’s their list of required items. Also, make sure you fill their backpacks at least a few days before school starts to avoid the morning-of scramble to find their pencils, paper, etc. Some teachers, more than others, can be specific about the supplies required. Keep your receipts so that you can return items that you do not need.

Re-Establish Bedtime and Mealtime Routines. Make plans to re-establish your bedtime and mealtime routines at least a week in advance of the first day of school.  This will ease your child back into the school year routine. Emphasize to them the benefits of a steady routine, i.e. a good night’s sleep and time for a healthy breakfast before school.

Freeze a Few Dinners That Are Easy to Make. Having a few quick and easy meals will prevent added stress on school nights and facilitate quality time spent around the dinner table as a family.

Visit School With Your Children. If your child is young or beginning a new school, visiting the school together can help alleviate any anxieties your child may harbor as well as resolve any of your child’s questions. First day familiarity with his or her classroom, lunchroom, locker and teacher will be invaluable to your child. Call ahead to schedule a time to meet with your child’s teacher beforehand.

Designate a Place for School Items (Backpacks, Lunchboxes, etc.) It may sound simple, but establishing a location in your home that your child habitually places their school items may prove crucial in those clutch moments when you’re pressed for time in the mornings. In the same location, have a spot where your child can place take home announcements from his or her teacher.

Set Aside a Location for Your Child to Do Homework. If possible, older children should be allowed the opportunity to study in a quiet place in the house. Whereas younger children will need to work in area like the kitchen or family room so that they can be monitored and encouraged.

Thank you reading. I truly hope these tips help you and your family this school year. For more helpful tips on a variety of school topics visit the NASPs website,www.nasponline.org/resources.

Friend Weekend Recap

befunky_artwork.jpg

Hey kids and families! Friend Weekend was this past week in KidzWorld Route 252 and it was a huge success. If you missed it, Friend Weekend was a celebration that marked the ending of our Big Idea of Friendship that we discussed in June and July. The kids were asked to practice worshipping together by inviting a friend to church. We had 46 first-time guests in Route 252. That’s 46 lives that are now different because their friend invited them to church, and we think that’s invaluable. Also, since we’ve been following the adventures of a budding rock band, they were encouraged to dress like rock stars. We had some pretty rockin’ characters for sure. Each service included drawings, prizes, games, a concert, and also, the finale to a month-long friendly competition between the boys and girls. The losing team captains got a pie in the face. The girls proved formidable by winning the first three services, but the guys refused to be shut out and claimed victory during the final service.

I’d like to thank all our staff and volunteers that helped make Friend Weekend so awesome, but more importantly, I’d like to thank everyone who took time to invite their friends and family to KidzWorld this past weekend. It would not have been such a success without you.

As a side note, we also continued our KidzWorld Summer Endurance Contest this weekend. Kids were asked to take a picture with our band and email it to kidzworld@newspring.org or upload it to Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter with #kidzworldcontest. If you took a photo, but forgot to send or upload it, there’s still time to do both. Make sure you get those submissions in, because each submission gives you a chance to win one of three $100 gift cards at our Back-to-School FX event on August 22.

I hope you and your family have enjoyed our celebration of Friendship. Don’t miss our Big Idea for August as we learn about Stewardship. See you soon!

Hey, KidzWorld Kids and families! If you’ve been following along with our Summer Endurance Contest, I’ve got excellent news for you. The third challenge is quickly approaching! If you haven’t been participating, now is an excellent time to start.

Our third challenge will be held during Friend Weekend, July 26th & 27th, in Route 252. In honor or our weekly bottom line, Friends Worship With Each Other, families are invited to take a picture of themselves with the band after the service. By uploading the picture to Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram with #kidzworldcontest or emailing the photo to kidzworld@newspring.org, you will be automatically entered for a chance to win one of three $100 gift cards that will be given away at the Back-to-School FX event on August 22nd. So make sure you come to Friend Weekend, and of course, bring a friend!

As a reminder, if you have photos from previous challenges that have not been uploaded yet, it’s never too late to submit them. We’re still taking photo submissions from our Summer FX in May. So if you still have those, go ahead and upload them with #kidzworldcontest or email them to kidzworld@newspring.org.

I hope you continue to have a fun, safe summer and we’ll see you in KidzWorld soon!

Friend Weekend July 26th and 27th

Hey families! We are super excited to announce Friend Weekend July 26th and 27th. All month long, your kids have been locked in a friendly Boys vs. Girls competition, and Friend Weekend will be the big finale that decides the winner. For each friend your child brings, they will earn points to help their team win and be entered to win some awesome prizes. But that’s not all! Because we’ve been following the adventures of a rock band the past few months, we’re invited all kids to dress like rock stars too. Dressing up will earn them even more points in the competition. Here’s a flyer and invitation you can download for them to use to invite their friends. Or send an email asking for more invites to Route252@newspring.org. Just make sure they fill out the invitation and bring it to Route 252 so they can be entered for the prize drawings.

Camp Update #14

As your kids pack up their stuff this morning to head back to Wichita, KS they’re having their very last small group time with their leaders. By looking at Jesus’ words in the book of Matthew, chapter 6, verses 25-34, we’re learning how trusting God means we don’t have to worry. Our bottom line is TRUST GOD BECAUSE HE KNOWS.

Camp Update #13

Hey parents we’re wrapping up here at camp. Your kids are having a blast and they’re still learning. Today we look at Jesus’ parable of the light in Matthew 5:13-16. We’re learning that not only can we have a relationship with Jesus, as our very best friend, but we can show others how much God loves them by the way we live. It’s all summed up in our bottom line of DO GOOD THINGS SO PEOPLE CAN SEE GOD IS GOOD.

Camp Update #11 – Recap Video Wednesday

Hey parents! Check out what your camper has been doing today in our Wednesday recap video. And just so you know, right now, your camper is hanging out at the beach party. They are having a blast with line dancing, s’mores, night volleyball and EVEN night blobbing! Tonight in our evening session, we told the story of the Prodigal Son. You can read that story for yourself in Luke 15:11-32. We also learned the bottom line, “Treat everyone like they are loved by God.” Mr. Dan gave an invitation and a ton of kids accepted Christ to be their best friend. And that is what camp is all about.
